Projects – Chay Ya Nepal

Chay Ya along with local governments and helping communities is building basic infrastructures necessary for providing education, health and environmental services. It helps in the operation and maintenance of the project assets to ensure that undeserved local citizens and communities get the services that they are entitled to by the state. Hence, the ultimate goal of Chay Ya is to match the needs of local citizens and communities with the government’s capacity to deliver them by helping the government to build and operate local infrastructure and institutions that can deliver. By technically assisting local governments to help build much needed infrastructure, Chay Ya ensures that government institutions in a democracy like Nepal are more accountable and responsive to the needs of the citizens. This hopefully will achieve twin results of enhancing local public service delivery ensuring the success of decentralization of Nepal and ameliorating the quality of democracy triggering more local political participation and sense of accountability among people towards government institutions.

Our Projects

Education

Chay Ya works to improve education services for the poor and remote children of Himalayas. The organization fosters quality education in remote schools by building safe school buildings, recruiting qualified school teachers and providing school uniforms and stationary to the children. Chay Ya began to restore and repair the school buildings damaged by the disastrous earthquake of April 2015 in Nepal. Upon completion of the project, affected students will be shifted from temporary learning centers to the permanent school buildings. The restoration of school project is underway in the Gorkha, Sindhupalchok, Rasuwa, Kailali and Dolpa districts of Nepal.

Health

Being one of the most beautiful and isolated places in the world, the Nepalese Himalaya also poses a threat for its inhabitants in terms of basic health care services. Living in the remote mountain villages mean that it takes days to reach the doctor. Locals lack basic health facilities and maternal services. Chay Ya helps build primary health care centers in rural mountain villages. Building health care centers in Gorkha, Humla and Mugu districts are ongoing projects. Similarly, it also organizes frequent free health camps in the mid-hills and Himalayan regions of Nepal. During health camps, we provides free health check-ups, distribution of free medicines to the people and similarly, health and hygiene awareness classes also conducted.

Environment

In Nepal we are facing various environmental problem such as loss of forest, forest degradation, soil erosion, air pollution, water pollution and unmanaged solid-waste. The causes and consequences of environmental degradation may be of different magnitude and scale, and are changing both in urban and rural areas. Chay Ya current work focuses on i) Solid waste, ii) Afforestation and iii) Climate change

Livelihood Improvement

The livelihood improvement project contributes to the strengthening of the general resilience (at individual, household, and community/village level) and empowerment of people in Nepal through income-generating activities.

Water, Sanitation and Hygiene

Nepal is a new federal democratic republic as per the definition of the new Constitution of Nepal, 2015. There are three different levels of government- federal, province and local. Nepal has 7 provinces and 753 local governments. With new local government systems having been established, their newly elected representatives require support as they familiarize themselves with their tasks. In particular, they need to build their knowledge and understanding of local government affairs and learn how best to handle their roles and responsibilities. Existing rules and regulations need to be updated to reflect the new distribution of responsibilities between the provincial and local levels and between elected representatives and public officials. Therefore, Chay Ya Nepal has initiated Local Government Support Program.

Humanitarian Relief

Chay Ya supports those people who are affected by natural disasters through its disaster relief programs to help cope with the impact of disaster and re-build their lives. The organization distributed foodstuffs, housing materials, and clothes to the people affected by April 2015 Earthquake and September 2017 Flood in Nepal. CGI sheets, blanket, tarpaulins, rice, lentils, noodle, salt, vegetable oil and mosquito coils were distributed to the affected families in Nepal. Distribution covered the extremely affected eight districts of Nepal: Gorkha, Rasuwa, Bhaktapur, Sindhupalchowk, Kavrepalanchowk, Kathmandu, Dolakha, Kaski, Rautahat, Parsa, Banke and Dang district.
