Chay Ya Nepal, in partnership with UNICEF Nepal, successfully conducted a series of two-day trainings on the repair and maintenance of WASH facilities in health care facilities across Lumbini, Sudurpaschim, and Madhesh Provinces. The trainings aimed to strengthen local capacity to ensure safe, functional, and sustainable WASH services in health care settings, aligned with WASHFIT standards and Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) requirements.
The training programs brought together support and maintenance staff, WASH supervisors, pipeline technicians, autoclave operators, electrical technicians, cleaners, and other support personnel from multiple health care facilities. Using a highly participatory and hands-on approach, the sessions combined technical inputs with practical exercises focused on plumbing works, basic masonry, sanitation and cleaning practices, autoclave operation and repair, and routine and preventive maintenance.
Provincial Highlights
In Lumbini Province, the training was conducted at Pauwa Hotel, Bhairahawa, where 30 support and maintenance staff enhanced their skills to carry out routine repairs and sustain WASH services within health care facilities. The training emphasized building local repair capacity to reduce downtime, promote ownership, and ensure long-term functionality of WASH infrastructure.
In Sudurpaschim Province, 31 participants from 12 health care facilities took part in the training. Participants included autoclave operators, WASH supervisors, pipeline technicians, and electrical technicians. The sessions focused on strengthening practical skills required for day-to-day operation and maintenance of WASH facilities, helping health care institutions remain safe and operational even in resource-constrained settings.
In Madhesh Province, the training engaged 35 participants from 15 health care facilities and hospitals, including operation and maintenance staff, cleaners, and support staff. The program was honored by the presence of Ms. Annapurna Mishra, UNICEF WASH Officer (Janakpur), as the Chief Guest. The training reinforced good sanitation practices, preventive maintenance, and proper autoclave use to strengthen WASH services and IPC compliance in health facilities.
Building Sustainable WASH Services
Across all three provinces, the trainings emphasized the importance of local ownership, accountability, and preventive maintenance to ensure that WASH facilities remain functional, safe, and responsive to the needs of patients and health workers. By equipping frontline maintenance and support staff with practical skills, the initiative contributes to improved health care quality, reduced infection risks, and stronger health systems.
