Communities in Jajarkot, severely affected by the recent earthquake, are gradually restoring their livelihoods as damaged irrigation systems are brought back into operation. The earthquake had destroyed key irrigation canals, leaving farmlands dry, reducing agricultural production, and placing additional strain on households that depend on farming for survival.
With the restoration of irrigation canals, water is once again flowing to agricultural fields, enabling farmers to resume cultivation. This has contributed to improved crop production, strengthened food security, and renewed confidence among farming communities working to rebuild their lives after the disaster.
This recovery effort is being led by Chay Ya Nepal, with financial support from the Government of Japan, in partnership with UNDP Nepal and UN-Habitat Nepal, and implemented in close coordination with local governments and communities in Jajarkot. The collaborative approach has ensured that rehabilitation works respond directly to local needs while strengthening community ownership and resilience.
The restoration of irrigation infrastructure is not only supporting immediate agricultural recovery but also laying the foundation for long-term livelihood sustainability in earthquake-affected areas. As farmers regain access to water, they are better positioned to rebuild income sources and move toward a more secure future.
