New Maternity Service Center in Bharta
A modern maternity service center (birthing center) is going to be constructed in Bharta village, Ward No. 3 of Shubhakalikha Rural Municipality, with a total estimated cost of NPR 6,953,498. The project will be implemented through a cost-sharing partnership between Chay-Ya Nepal and Shubhakalikha Rural Municipality.
According to the rural municipality, Chay-Ya Nepal will cover 80% of the cost, while the municipality will contribute the remaining 20%. Due to the lack of a maternity center in Bharta, pregnant and postpartum women have faced ongoing challenges. To address this, a modern facility is being built to offer 24-hour maternity services, said Govinda Prasad Acharya, a representative of the municipality.
“The rural municipality is constructing a modern building to ensure the organized operation and smooth delivery of maternal health services,” he said. “Providing safe reproductive care to women in remote areas is our top priority.”
Kamal Thapa, Executive Director of Chay-Ya Nepal, stated that the organization has been working to establish maternity centers in remote and underserved areas where such services are lacking. “We’ve been coordinating with local governments for a long time to expand access to safe maternity care,” he explained. “This campaign aims to prevent loss of life due to unsafe childbirth, especially in hard-to-reach regions.”
Thapa further noted that the maternity center in Bharta is being established in collaboration with the local government under this broader campaign. Skilled health professionals will be deployed at the center, and the rural municipality has agreed to handle all other necessary management and operational arrangements.
Ganesh Shahi, Head of the Health Division of the rural municipality, shared that the goal is to complete the building within five months. “The center, being developed in partnership with Chay-Ya Nepal, will include a pharmacy, a delivery room, and staff quarters,” he said. “It is being set up to ensure better access to maternal health care for pregnant and postpartum women living in remote settlements.”
Kendra Bahadur Shahi, Chief Administrative Officer of the rural municipality, stated that the land required for the center has been provided free of cost by local social worker Nanda Bahadur Shahi.
